In this episode of Inside the C-Suite, Christy Honeycutt sits down with Joelle Emerson, Co-Founder and CEO of Surface, to explore how leaders can rethink systems that are “working” before they become outdated.

Joelle shares her journey from civil rights lawyer to people-technology leader, including Surface’s bold decision to move from its existing software to an entirely AI-native platform. She discusses navigating uncertainty, challenging assumptions, and changing the story customers and employees already associate with a company.

The conversation also explores how AI is reshaping HR and people leadership. As technology takes on more operational work, HR has an opportunity to become a stronger strategic partner—using data, judgment, and AI to focus on higher-value decisions while preserving the human elements of leadership.

Joelle and Christy ultimately examine what this means for culture, accountability, and the future of work—and why the most important transformation may be the willingness to stop protecting what worked yesterday and build for what comes next.
