We desperately need early childhood educators and social workers. If a university cuts those programs because an ROI algorithm flags them as financially underperforming, the university might save some budget overhead, but society absorbs a catastrophic loss.

We are seeing a massive shift away from reliable federal dollars. Federal policy volatility is unprecedented right now. Consider the proposed elimination of Grad Plus loans. Yeah, that's a huge issue.
[00:09:41] We are talking about nearly 2 million borrowers. Graduate students are the essential engine of university research. They are the ones actually running the experiments in the labs. If you eliminate their funding, the research engine stops. We are also seeing severe cuts and legal challenges to federal research grants. Which forces schools to look elsewhere. Exactly. [00:11:07] Well, industry collaboration is fine in moderation. But when you systematically substitute federal grants with corporate funding, you fundamentally change the nature of the inquiry. You mentioned IBM and Regeneron. Corporations have legal, fiduciary duties to their shareholders, right? They operate on quarterly or annual timelines. They want results. Exactly. So when they fund university research, they naturally skew it toward applied science, projects that have immediate commercialization potential. And what gets crowded out?

But I'm talking about the theoretical inquiry that lacks obvious immediate profit pathways, but yields massive societal breakthroughs decades down the line. Doesn't institutional preservation require sacrificing breadth?

If you look at a university like a biodiverse ecosystem, cutting the humanities to blindly fund applied technology is a lot like a farmer who decides to rip up a complex, diverse crop rotation to plant a single, highly profitable cash crop. It pays the bills. It looks incredibly efficient on a quarterly balance sheet. But over time, you completely destroy the nutrients in the soil. You lose the resilience that allowed anything to grow in the first place.

So the smart, market-aligned play is what the Illinois Institute of Technology is doing.
[00:17:39] They just became the first U.S. university to announce a full branch campus in India. That is how you survive. You build the campus where the 86 million new students are. You don't wait for demographic trends in the U.S. to magically reverse themselves. Well, branch campuses carry tremendous, often unpredictable geopolitical risks. We just saw Texas A&M close its massive campus in Qatar, citing regional instability and shifting political climates.
[00:18:07] It is not a simple fix. Nothing is simple right now. Fair enough. And I actually agree with you that strategic internationalization is vital for survival. Where we completely diverge is on what we are exporting to those students. Okay. If an American university sets up a branch campus in India, its competitive advantage is not just technical or engineering training. India already has exceptional domestic technical institutes. They do.
[00:18:35] The American competitive advantage on the global stage has always been the liberal arts model, the unique integration of experiential learning, critical thinking, and cross-disciplinary innovation. If we eliminate those exact programs at home to achieve efficiency, we destroy the very brand differentiation that makes our universities globally attractive in the first place. But they are adapting online. Yes.
